About Broadband

Broadband (ADSL) internet is available from a wide range of internet service providers at a range of speeds, qualities and service levels, however people often feel let down by their broadband service... we may be able to help!

Originally all broadband services were 512Kbps, then later speeds offered were 512Kbps, 1024Kbps or 2048Kbps - these services were provided by BT equipment at the exchange which was sub-let (wholesale) to the various internet service prodivers (ISPs). More recently BT introduced the "ADSL Max" service which rather than providing a fixed speed provides a variable speed in the range 135Kbps to 8192Kbps (8Mbps).

The "ADSL Max" product is a variable speed service which is supposed to optimise itself for your conditions - things which affect the line quality, and hence speed include the distance between your house and the exchange, the age and quality of the BT copper wire, whether the wire runs underground or above ground over telegraph poles, etc.

Other important factors include the make/model/quality of your broadband modem/router, the age and quality of the phone line wiring around your house and the type of ADSL filters installed.
